Gubbio and surroundings
Laying on the slopes of Monte Ingino, Gubbio is one of the most ancient towns of Umbria, extremely well preserved during centuries and rich of monuments testifying its glorious past. Two important witnesses of the past are the Tavole Eugubine, one of most important documents referring to the ancient people called Italici and the Teatro Romano just outside the walls of the town. Dominated from the top by the Basilica of St. Ubaldo, Gubbio keeps architectonic works of art such as the Palazzo dei Consoli, the Piazza Pensile e the Palazzo Pretorio. Pure Renaissance style the Palazzo Ducale by Francesco Giorgio Martino witnessing the grandeur of the Signoria di Montefeltro Of great interest also the Cattedrale, Santa Maria Nuova, Church and Convent of Sant'Agostino and San Francesco as well as San Giovanni, characterised by the facade and bell tower in romanic style. Among the most important events taking place in the city we should absolutely mention Palio della Balestra and the Corsa dei Ceri.

Populated by 34.000 inhabitants, 6.000 of them living inside the walls it is a medieval town being preserved for centuries by a defensive apparatus made up of eight fortified entrance portals and a long belt of town walls, erected along the slopes of the Monte Subasio (424 m s.l.) and topped by the Rocca. Geographical position, mild temperatures and dry climate make a vacation here enjoable at any time of the year.

Situated on the lower southern flank of Mt. Subasio, 219 m above sea level, it has very ancient origins and according to the most famous historicians its foundation dates back to the Umbri. Its name Hispellum comes from the Romans whose colony it became in the 1st century BC.
